BIRT – Bhutan Inter-Bank Real Time – Fund Transfer System

BIRT system is an nation wide funds transfer system to facilitate transfer from one bank branch to any other bank branch. BIRT facilitates transfer of funds from one individuals to other individual, one institution to other institution, one institution to one individual.

It is a mode of electronic funds transfer from one bank account to another bank account. Customer can remit money to any branch of any bank within the country through BIRT.

The BIRT system support three types of services:

  1. BITS ( or Batched Settlement Service) – It enables to transfer maximum limit of Nu. 1,000,000/- (Ngultrum One Million Only) in a batched settlement cycle, Batch timing is set up by RMA.
  2. RTGS (Real-Time Gross Settlement Service) – The payment made through this service settle in real time basis and allows transfer above Nu.1,000,000/- (One Million and above).
  3. Bulk Payment Service – This service allows to handle large volume of payment from single account to multiple beneficiaries. It can be salary, pension payments, loan repayments, etc.

Charges for BIRT Transactions

As per the directives by Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan, following Charges shall be recovered on BIRT transactions within Bhutan with effect from 1st July 2014.
